Whether used as an under garment worn beneath ones plate or mail armor or simply on its own, the heavy padding in our Medieval Gambeson provides a great deal of protection. Similar in many ways to a modern-day flak jacket or bulletproof vest, the jacket features layers of wool and cotton padding between 100% cotton lining and outer shell. Strap-and-buckle front closures and open armpits for mobility alleviate some of the discomfort similar tunics are known for. Providing excellent blow-absorbing properties when worn separately and superior protection from cuts when worn under mail or plate armor, all of our Medieval Gambesons are perfect for winter time gaming or re-enacting. Because it was always possible to drive the point of a weapon through the rings of a mail shirt or shear it with a good cut, under armor was often necessary to reduce the risk of injury. Aside from this practical use, gambesons also were used by civilians as a fashion statement, giving the appearance of chivalry and a military status.
