ThunderCats and the Sword of Omens

The battle cry of Lion-O, the very first thing we have to hear during the opening of the ThunderCats show: “Thunder, thunder, ThunderCats Ho!” The most iconic TV series with the most iconic line of all times. But what was the purpose of this line? The line gave Lion-O’s legendary Sword of Omens the power to attack. The sword was for defending and supporting the people associated with Lion-O. Even if you have only watched ThunderCats a few times, you might have come across a glimpse of Sword of Omens. It is easily recognizable by its cat’s eye gem hilt, and its ability to transform from a short dagger to a full-length sword in seconds. Moreover, the battle cry gives the Eye of Thundera to change into the ThunderCats logo, which fires a beam into the sky.
Quite classy, no?
But with great power comes great responsibility, as it has been said in Harry Potter! Sword of Omens is no less alien to enemies. Many evildoers have targeted the sword, like Mumm-Ra, the sorcerer who wanted the power of the sword to help him rule the Third Earth.
But how could the ThunderCats let the sword go! The ThunderCats wouldn’t have been ThunderCats without it!

  1. The Sword Never Harmed Anyone by Cutting
We know very well that swords are meant for cutting. However, this might come as a surprise, but Lion-O never used the Sword of Omens to cut anyone. As a ThunderCats fan, it may have come to your attention, that the only time Lion-O used the sword was to fire lightning bolts or to hack away metal and stones. This is because of the rules of children television in the 1980s.
  1. The Sword was Used by Snarf
In ThunderCats, it’s normally only Lion-O who uses the sword. However, it has been carried and used by others, which also includes Snarf. Snarf attained the sword by entering the ventilation shafts. When he came back with the sword, it obeyed him.
  1. The Sword has a Curse on it
The Sword of Omens was designed and forged for defending the ThunderCats. This implies that it could not be used to harm the ThunderCats in any situation. Nevertheless, to make sure that it never does hurt the ThunderCats, a curse was put on it, which repels any orders that may cause harm to the ThunderCats.
  1. Sword of Omens vs. Excalibur
There is an episode titled “Excalibur”, where it comes to attention that there exists a sword more powerful than the Sword of Omens. Mumm-Ra tracked down the sword called Excalibur of King Arthur. By tricking the Lady of the Lake, Mumm-Ra attained it and used it against Lion-O. the sword was able to defeat Lion-O and it also broke the Eye of Thundera in half.

The heart of the sword is the Eye of Thundera. It is a jewel that is recognized by many fans of ThunderCats. It is famous for its ability to turn its normal cat’s eye to the ThunderCats symbol when the sword is extended. Embedded in the hilt, it is the source of the power of the sword. Moreover, it is ALIVE! The Eye is able to distinguish between a good or evil holder, the power needed, and it responds to the commands given to it verbally.
