Butterfly Knives: Performing a Complex Flip

Posted by SwordsSwords on Jul 16th 2020

Real Butterfly Knives are quite precarious to operate. Flipping the knife open might intrigue you a lot, though be very cautious. It requires a great deal of skill and enhanced hand-eye coordination. For practice purpose, you can always use a replica knife – they are legal and doesn’t feature very sharp blade or pointy which at a great extent eliminate the risk of injury. If you are looking forward to an easier way of performing complicated flip, go through the below-listed steps.

Step 1: Use Your Dominant Hand

The foremost step is to use a closed knife to protect yourself from any unexpected injury and get ready for the trick. Since you are about to flip the knife open, it’s imperative that the knife is in a closed position. While holding the knife, stick out the hand.

Step 2: Curl Your Thumb

Keep the thumb slightly twisted under the catch. Position the knife end-to-end and along the second joint of your fingers. Next, bend your hand inwards and place the thumb right under the catch. Flick ascending with your thumb and opposite to the catch to open it. It is highly important to maintain a firm grip since there is always a risk of a knife flying out of your hand and you end up hurting yourself or anyone around. At the same time, do not press it extremely hard.

Step 3: Flip the Catch

Now it’s time to flip the catch to your dominant hand. If you are right-handed, flip the catch in the right direction and vice versa.

Step 4: Flick the First Blade Up

Riffle the very first blade up and allow the safe side to hit your fingers. Make sure to perform a very little jerking movement and tweak the back half of your knife against thumb and fingers. It will let the forward-facing half and the blade downward. Use a striking movement and allow the front half to go up and hit the posterior of your fingers. Keep in mind that heavier knives tend to need more than an insignificant jerking motion. In this case, you need to swap your hand as soon as you flick it achieving the desired speed and consistency.

Step 5: Flick the Second Blade Up

At this point, take away your forefinger from the knife as it goes upward by keeping it straight out. The front section will move up and hit the back of your forefinger. You will consider it as the back piece. We recommend you perform this technique using a dull blade. Once you get proficient at it, the knife is all yours – Sharp it as much as you want!

Step 6: Re-curl Your Fingers

Re-bend your fingers perfectly holding the back piece. Slip-up your forefinger out the topmost and again use the handle with your thumb. Repeat the flicking movements as mentioned above. Practice and Practice!
