Self-Defense: The Truth

Posted by SwordsSwords on Jul 4th 2018

Self-defense isn’t exactly what everyone thinks about it. Self-defense is all about one thing, and that isn’t beating up or taking out the attacker with the martial arts moves. The basic purpose of self-defense is to prevent any sort of injury to yourself. However, to achieve that, physical techniques are not always necessary. The best possible way to avoid getting hurt is to avoid the attack, period. This way there is no way that you will be injured. Moreover, it isn’t as hard as it may seem. It is much easier than the physical defense. Though there is a lot to learn about prevention, it is not difficult to grasp, and literally, everyone can do it.

Prevention

Prevention is to learn about how you can stop the assaults from happening. It is quite easy, and in many of the situations, there is no need for physical self-defense or martial arts. Following are the simple guidelines that you need to follow. These will minimize the chances of you being attacked.
  1. Avoid any dangerous place and suspicious looking people.
  2. Do not be a target; do not leave yourself open.
  • Always be aware of the surroundings.
  1. Do not get into pointless arguments, do not provoke, or let any sort of verbal conflict escalate.
  2. Whenever you feel threatened, create a distance.
  3. If there is a possibility of being bodily harm and no point of escape, give up your valuables.
  • Guard your private areas that are prone to be attacked.

When to resort to Martial Arts?

Be clear about one thing, the only time that you will need to defend yourself physically is in a worst-case scenario. The real sort of violence is ugly, chaotic, fast and ever-changing. This sort of face-off is something you would want to avoid, for ethical, legal and physical reasons. The martial arts that you learn don’t actually prepare you for such scenarios. If ever a situation does come along where physically defending yourself becomes necessary, then stylized and limited martial art cannot help you. For such a situation, you require a functional combination of strategy and techniques that require a good amount of training and maybe a little amount of luck as well. Then there are situations where there might be weapons. Do you think you can defend yourself against a gun, knife or such weapons? To physically defend yourself you need to learn to fend off such attacks as well. Weapons give a great advantage; however, a weapon used against you puts you at a disadvantage too. Hence, proper training is necessary. Conclusively, prevention is a much easier process to master, but self-defense in form of physical defense is also necessary.
