Using OTF Knife to Make a Spear
Posted by SwordsSwords on Aug 31st 2023
We all love a little fun and adventure in the wild. But, in a real survival scenario, a spear comes in handy a lot. It’ll not only help you with hunting or fishing, but it’s a great tool for protection as well. Creating a spear with your OTF knife or other survival knife is a simple yet important skill.
Here we will list down the basic steps of creating a spear. There are several ways of doing so and some can take hours to complete. However, we’re going for a simple and quick method, it’ll take less time and energy but will be quite effective.
Advice: If you only have one knife in such a scenario, we suggest that you do not use it to make a spear. Instead, use that knife to hone, shape and sharpen a wood piece to a spear point.
What you need:
- Tree Branch or Limb
- Knife
- Length of twine or anything strong that can be wrapped and tied
Steps
#1
Look around, see if you can find a piece of wood that can turn into a solid spear handle. You need a strong circular branch that fits into your hand easily.
#2
Put the handle of the OTF knife right next to the spear handle to check if it is stable enough.
#3
Hack off the imperfect parts of the branch, so that it doesn’t interfere with your handling of the spear. It would be better if the knife handle has as much of clean contact as possible.
#4
Now you need twine or some sort of a strong line. This will help attach the knife to the spear handle. We prefer if you use one of our paracord survival bbraceletsfor it. It is quite strong. Unbind the paracord to get the length required.
#5
Put your OTF knife to the prepared spear handle.
#6
Tightly wrap the handle of the knife to the spear with the paracord.
#7
Once the OTF knife is secured to the spear, tie off the rope. It’s recommended that you wrap around the entire handle of the knife.
There you go, now you have the perfect hunting tool at your hand. It makes a good fishing tool and a medium range weapon as well.
